The boat represents the physical and the natural realm where we
operate through our own limited understanding and through the five
senses. The water represents the spiritual realm where we operate
through revelation knowledge and faith. The world is our boat and
the water is the Kingdom of God. Jesus is teaching his disciples
that in order to live a life of higher calling and commitment they
had to leave the security, comfort, and familiarity of their boat
and step out into the deep and walk on water towards him. Water
walking is not about risk it is about discernment. Jesus is looking
for wisdom and maturity. Nothing Jesus said is common sense, it
is revelation sense, and it reaches the shores where common sense
fails. Water- walkers have to leave the boat. God has designed us
to do more than simply avoid failure. He has designed us for faith-filled
adventures with him. What is your boat? Where do you put your faith
when life gets stormy? Your boat is anything that stops you from
stepping out in faith to walk with Jesus. Leaving it will be scary
but it will be sweet.
When Jesus said "come" the invitation was open to all. He did not
say "come Peter" or "Peter come". But only Peter responded. Once
Peter was satisfied that it was Jesus who called him, he left the
rocking boat and entrusted himself to the power the Rock of Ages.
Refuse to be locked in by the surrounding circumstances. Too much
analysis leads to paralysis. Staying in the boat does not guarantee
you safety; it guarantees only that you will eventually die of something
else. The disciples who stayed in the boat were "boat potatoes"
similar to the "couch potatoes" we in the homes who enjoy watching
in comfort without actually doing anything, and the "pew potatoes"
in the church who go to church to be "high" on Jesus and won't take
the risk and challenges involved in following Jesus. Peter was willing
to leave his religious boat and walk on the water towards Jesus.
He was walking towards Jesus who was in the water. The boat is a
place we like to belong to and fit in nicely with out upsetting
the boat. Christianity is not a religion to be practiced but a relationship
to be experienced with a Person! There are many good reasons for
leaving the boat and here are few: 1.It is how your faith develops.
2. It is the opportunity to be above average and head towards excellence.3.It
is how you discover your calling. We develop deep-water faith only
when we leave the security, comfort, confidence, reliance and predictability
of the boat, then step out with him. You may have worked for years
creating a name for yourself, creating a manageable orderly life,
maintaining an illusion of control, when suddenly your life, programme,
schedule, agenda and routine get interrupted. God shakes everything
up by asking you to step up in faith and face crises, fear, obstacles, opportunities,
challenges way too big to handle alone, people failure, frustrations
disappointments to name a few . Why? To increase your dependence
on him.
