When we study the history of various labour movements took place in the latter half of 19th century we can see a very important day called May Day. What is May Day? May Day is International Worker's Day. On May 1, 1890, May Day demonstrations took place in the United States of America, most countries in Europe and Latin American Countries like Chile and Peru. In Havana the Cuban workers marched in the world's first May Day demanding the eight-hour day, equal rights for Blacks and Whites and working class unity. With proud we can remember that in 1927, workers of our country also observed May Day with demonstrations in Calcutta, Madras and Bombay. May Day picked up momentum across the world and it is embraced by millions of workers in every country of the world as a day to raise their class demands. Two thousand years ago, our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ declared liberty to the captives and commissioned his followers (his workers) to win the world for Him. By His death and resurrection our Lord defeated Satan at the cross and His church to possess His possessions and enter into heritage (Psalms 2:8). Our Lord Jesus Christ Commanded"Therfore go and make disciples of all nation, baptizing in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holly Spirit and teaching them to obey every thing I have Commanded you.And surely I am with you always,to the very end of the age."(Matthew 28:19,20) In this context, I would like to quote the famous words of Karl Marx. In 1848 Karl Marx and Fredich Engels drew up a manifesto in Brussels that concluded with the stirring words "Workers of the World, Unite! You have nothing to lose but your chains. You have a world to win." Yes, We have a world to win for Christ. This is the moment for the total mobilization of all Christian believers to fulfil our Lord's last command "Go into all the world and preach the Gospel to all the creation.(Mark 16:15). What is Gospel? The answer is very simple. Gospel is the good news of salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. (GOSPEL- God Offers Sinful People Eternal Life) He himself commanded the church to publish the good news to all mankinds. As written in Timothy 2:4,"God wants all men to be saved and come to knowledge of the truth." But this great task can never be completed once for all. It must be undertaken afresh in every generation that is why God is always urging His church to go into the entire world and preach the gospel to all the creation. Gospel is highly essential to all, people of all ages and from all walks of life. It is no matter weather the person is rich or poor, educated or illiterate, Christians or nonchristians, man or woman. What Good requires from his people is total obedience to his command to evangelise the world. The church must evangelise, otherwise it will be fossilised. The parable of Good Samaritan (Luke10:25-37) teaches that the need constitute an obligation. As far as the Samaritan was concerned, the need was a call to act. And he obeyed. He took a lot of pain to save the wounded man. His altitude towards the needy, Helpless and dying person was different from the altitudes shown by the two pious religionists, the priest and the Levite. He was more humane than the other two. At the end of the parable we read that our Lord told the expert in law "Go and do likewise." I don't think that it is meant for a particular person. It is of course, a universal appeal to all Christian workers. Let us take up this challenge and build up the kingdom of Heaven on Earth. |
